Barack Obama Wins Propaganda Piece Prize

This time last year Barack Obama was being sold to America – and the rest of us – as the long-awaited New World Messiah, a harbinger of hope and change, a president not unlike Kennedy who would lead us all to the Promised Land and make us feel somehow better.

Nine months later and the dream of hope and change is fading. Still wondering what happened to the Promised Land many are now realizing they were sold a line, and that out there beyond the dream’s thin veil it’s business as usual.

• Guantanamo bay still operates as an illegal and brutal torture camp.

• America continues to expand its nuclear weapons arsenal, despite Obama’s rhetoric to the contrary.

• CIA front man Hamid Karzai remains president of Afghanistan, where up to 100,000 extra American troops will be deployed in Obama’s first year in office.

• And in the Middle East, Mahmoud Abbas and his American-backed quisling government remain in power while the democratically elected Hamas government continues to be shunned and marketed by America as an Al Qaeda-style terrorist group. Some change.

Indeed, Obama’s so-called ‘renewed vigour’ for peace in the Middle East is in my view hollow. America’s foreign policy in the region – and everywhere else for that matter – remains unchanged, despite the president’s velvet tongue.

We can all give voice to our desire for a more peaceful world, but if the Nobel Peace Prize is to be won for rhetoric alone then what has it come to be worth?

So the question for me remains: what has Barack Obama actually done to be cast in the same grand light as Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela, all previous Nobel Peace Prize winners?

The answer is, I’m afraid, not a lot.

A Travesty, Any Way Up

Beneath the surface, of course, the award is meaningless, except perhaps as a propaganda coup, a move by the West’s banking and industrial elite to further embroider Obama’s messianic status.

But it has nothing to do with peace.

The prize is, after all, the legacy of Alfred Nobel, and this in itself is one the world’s greatest ever ironies. Nobel was the inventor of dynamite and founder of Bofors, the arms manufacturer responsible for supplying the famous Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun to both sides during World War II.

Then again, maybe that’s what Nobel meant by peace—giving both sides an equal opportunity to obliterate one another in any given conflict. It’s certainly a tactic which has worked well enough ever since.

For the record, Bofors is now part of BAE Systems, one of the world’s biggest arms manufacturers.

Perhaps, then, the Nobel Peace Prize should be renamed. After all, the British Aerospace Peace Prize seems all the more fitting for a modern-day president with two major wars on the go.

The idea could be even further extrapolated; we could even have two versions of the prize.

The Desert Storm Prize for bringing peace and democracy to war-torn Iraq, and the Opium Yield Prize for restoring peace and stability in Afghanistan. Beautiful.

On the other hand, perhaps we should leave it just the way it is: the Propaganda Piece Prize, deservedly won by the world’s most practised purveyor of propaganda pieces, President Barack Obama.

Any way up it’s a travesty.
