They don’t come much weirder than this.

In October 1943, during a top secret US Naval experiment designed to make one of its ships invisible, the destroyer USS Eldridge is said to have disappeared for a moment in time, and then reappeared, having travelled 40 years through a hyperspace time-loop to Montauk in Long Island, New York, 1983.

On its return to 1943 in Philadelphia Harbour, where The Philadelphia Experiment was carried out, many of the crew were said to be in a pretty bad way, some experiencing extreme nausea, even schizophrenia, while others were seen to fade in and out of sight and others still were fused into the ship’s hull as though melted there by the extreme temperatures generated by their recent time shift.

It was reported that those crew members who survived the ordeal underwent a form of brainwashing to prevent them from talking publicly about the experiment.

The Philadelphia Experiment was so named because it was carried out in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Pennsylvania, an attempt by military scientists, some say, to bend light around the USS Eldridge in an attempt to render the ship invisible to the enemy.

What had begun as a rather more realistic radar-invisibility experiment soon turned into something altogether more fantastical.

The Philadelphia Experiment was said to have been an early and somewhat crude application of the unified field theory, and to have employed Tesla technology in its endeavour to achieve what quantum physicists are still at pains to define.

Other accounts claim the experiment was an exercise in antigravity research that went ludicrously wrong.

The Philadelphia Experiment: Montauk And The Hyperspace Time Tunnel

If the story so far is not weird enough, get this.

In a subsequent project in 1983, at a disused air base in Montauk, Long Island, the US military is said to have created and stabilized a time tunnel through which they again made contact with the USS Eldridge.

According to this version of events, the Eldridge had become trapped in hyperspace at some point during the earlier Philadelphia Experiment.

Contact with an alien race, from whom the military gleaned knowledge of advanced etheric technologies is also said to have been made through the time tunnel.

The Montauk Project was said to have been part of the US government’s psychological warfare program.
