Scientists have finally confirmed that astronauts who venture beyond the earth’s atmosphere are in danger of developing “cancer and fertility loss” from exposure to harmful cosmic rays, according to The Telegraph

Astronauts face a similar risk, scientists say, from exposure to radiation produced by solar flares.

According to a report in New Scientist magazine, radiation from cosmic rays bombards the earth in cyclical peaks and troughs, which are governed by the level of solar activity.

Simply put, during the 90-or-so-year cycle when solar winds are high, we are protected from cosmic radiation but susceptible to solar radiation. During the 90-or-so-year cycle when solar winds are relatively quiet, we are less affected by solar radiation but more susceptible to cosmic radiation.

And either way, for astronauts in space it is a lose-lose situation. Beyond the earth’s protective atmosphere, scientists have confirmed, cosmic and/or solar radiation causes cancer: period.

What I find particularly interesting about this latest revelation is the claim by NASA that radiation would not have adversely affected the Apollo astronauts as they journeyed out beyond the Van Allen Belt on their way to the moon (see NASA MOON LANDING HOAX).

The Van Allen Belt, remember, is effectively earth’s primary radiation shield.

NASA claims the astronauts were subjected to no more than 1 rem (Radiation Exposure Monitoring). But there is no firm evidence to support this claim.

Quite the opposite. According to New Scientist magazine, scientists are now warning NASA that the space agency’s planned return to the moon in or around 2020 could be dangerous for its astronauts due to predicted high levels of cosmic radiation!
