Do we have the right to bomb the moon?

Space Exploration the American Way – bomb ‘em first, ask questions later. NASA’s plans to bomb the moon cause major concerns as many unhappy with gun-slinger approach…
By Jon King
Are They Allowed To Do That?
NASA is planning later this year to bomb the moon in a attempt to discover whether sufficient amounts of water exist to sustain a planned moon base.
This, at least, is the official story. The story circuiting the conspiracy boards is they’re planning to bomb alien bases up there, while the question on everyone’s lips seems to be, aliens or not: are they allowed to do that?
The notion that mysterious structures photographed on the moon could be the remains of alien bases has long been debated, of course.
But now the debate does appear to have become rather more urgent as theorists fear NASA might even be engaging in some secret intergalactic warfare with aliens.
Others are simply concerned about the ethics involved in bombing the moon, or any other celestial body for that matter. After all, isn’t there some unwritten universal law that says we shouldn’t be doing this kind of thing?
And what is it in the American psyche that makes them think they can solve everything with a bomb anyway?
Or if not a bomb, exactly, then a fully fuelled up, 40-foot long 5000-pound Centaur rocket travelling at twice the speed of a bullet.
Because on this occasion, that’s the ‘bomb’ we’re talking about.
Bombing Visible From Earth
On or around October 8th the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) will launch a Centaur rocket programmed to slam into the lunar surface at a speed of approximately 1.55 miles per second.
The resultant explosion is expected not only to make a serious dent in the lunar surface. But also to throw up a plume of gas and debris 6 miles high, making it visible from earth.

Having blasted off from Cape Canaveral on June 18th, LCROSS is currently orbiting earth while its on-board computers work overtime endeavouring to precisely identify its intended target—a permanently shadowed crater near the moon’s south pole, where it is suspected ice may have formed.
According to NASA, the hope is that the debris cloud formed by the impact will contain water ice or vapour. If sufficient water ice or vapour is detected, NASA says, it could mean the space agency is one step closer to building a base on the moon.
That’s assuming the aliens acquiesce, of course.
Bases On The Far Side Of The Moon
Those less trusting of NASA suspect the real reason for the bombing is to destroy alien bases concealed on the far side of the moon.
Many believe the Apollo missions of the late 1960s and early 70s encountered alien craft on the moon, and that they were ultimately warned off by the aliens and their superior firepower.

This is the reason quoted by some researchers for NASA’s reluctance to return to the moon since 1973. And Russia’s otherwise inexplicable decision never to send a manned mission to the moon, period.
Whether NASA is these days more confident in its own improved firepower, of course, and that, therefore, this might be a muscle-flexing mission designed to warn the aliens of our imminent return to the moon regardless (if we ever went in the first place), remains to be seen.
Meanwhile the debate as to whether it is ethically sound for us to bomb the moon with impunity rages on. What say you? Are we immune from cosmic law? Do we have some inalienable birthright to bomb whatever celestial bodies we want, with impunity?
Is NASA really on a fact-finding mission, or is there something more sinister underlying the space agency’s plans to bomb the moon this autumn?
Love to get your views on this one…

I cant even begin to express how pissed off i am that this is happening before our very eyes, and i feel completely helpless.., Unfortunately i have just found out about our plan to bomb the moon, and immediately wanted to form some sort of protest. I mean what kind of right do we have to do something like this , which could have so many adverse affects on our moon that we cant fortell., I am sickened and wish there was someway this could be stopped, And why were people not given a choice to decide as a consensus. We have crossed the line here and I wonder what other things our government is going to continue doing or what they are really up to with this whole mission? I havent felt this adamant about anything ever, because it just feels Oh So Wrong in so many ways…..God help us

there is no reason to bomb our moon! we are even planing on sending man back up there to explore any part of the moon. Why bomb it to find ice when we can send a rover and will send man again? something is very fishy!! we should have been able to vote on it and all nations should have a say

The story does sound fishy. Very fishy indeed! Why has there been so little coverage of this story in the corporate media? I caught a 10-second blurb on it on CNN this morning and that was all. Strange. If this is indeed an attack on an alien base, who knows what the repercussions will be for us back here on earth. Will a hostile alien race invade earth?

I suggest you all become more informed instead of ignorantly freaking out about a simple science experiment. Maybe start with a few basic lessons in physics and astronomy. If you actually look at more sources for more legit information you’d find that:
“NASA says the Centaur impact will produce a crater about 20 yards wide and as deep as a swimming pool. It will have less effect on the Moon than a mosquito hitting a jumbo jet.” http://news.skymania.com/2009/10/countdown-to-bombing-raid-on-moon.html
It actually sickens me how you base your opinions on little to no information. And by the way all nations do have a say, that’s why we have this thing orbiting our planet called the INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION! Japan just collided a probe into the moon in June.

Lia, for a lot of people this is not just about ‘science’ but as alluded to in the article (above) it’s also about ethics and how we conduct ourselves in our little corner of the galaxy. Maybe you should take a few basic lessons in that.
As for your assertion that we should look at “more sources”, well forgive me for falling over laughing but I see the only source you quote is NASA, and if you’re gullible enough to believe what they tell you then, well, that’s why I’ve just fallen over laughing!

Nasa obviously think they have the right to do whatever they desire with the moon. Maybe allegedly planting a flag on it, the US thinks it owns it.

Well once again we’ll never know the whole story. I have a feeling they must know, their bombing actions would not effect the tide effects our beautiful moon of our Earth. Surely they would not knowingly do this. Lets hope!!!

Well as I see it The American Flag is flying on the moon and no other is. So yes they can do whatever they want. As for what they are doing weither it is for science or attacking aliens, I do think we should hear more about it before the day of or even after. The Government of not only the U.S. but other government do keep to many secrets and I think along with many others that it is time that they tell us. And I doubt that our government would really shoot a bomb strong enough at our moon that would harm us. And if they are shoot at alien Im sure they are in some way hostile and therefore saving your behinds. So be happy. If nothing more they are at the attempt to improve mankind.

I am utterly shocked at the reaction this managed to provoke. They dropped a relatively small object at relatively high speed into a ball of rock and dust in order to examine the contents of (what turned out to be) the relatively tiny puff of dust it creates.
It served a sound scientific purpose, and I’m pretty freaking sure that any little green men would have been unconcerned by an impact of an order of several magnitudes smaller than any other natural collision.
The idea that this could have adverse affects on the moon, or by some extension, the Earth would be laughable if it didn’t make me want to cry.
There was a mountain of easily accessible information about this little tin can being hurled at the moon before it occurred, yet countless people grasped the ridiculous notion of a lunar bomb and ran in their usual, gullible way to cry and wail about the poor moon men.
My faith in mankind is waning by the day. Roll on 2012; the galactic furnace awaits, and there’s nothing left to lose but out ignorance.
