Massive increase of UFO sightings in 2009

Nick Pope claims the closure of the MOD’s UFO Desk could leave Britain open to alien invasion after UFO sightings increase fourfold in last two years…
DI55 And The MOD’s UFO Desk
A massive increase in UFO sightings has prompted Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) to consider reopening its ‘UFO Desk’.
British airspace is four times more likely to be penetrated by unidentified structured craft than it was just two years ago, according to official figures, and this has resulted in MOD chiefs rethinking Britain’s official position with regard to UFOs.
“Reported UFO sightings in 2008 were double those of 2007,” former MOD man and UFO expert, Nick Pope, told ITN News. “The figures for 2009 have already surpassed those for 2008, which means this year’s reported sightings could be quadruple those of 2007.”
Nick Pope has recently stated his desire to reopen the MOD’s official ‘UFO desk’ (or department), which he headed from 1991–1994, as he believes that if we continue to ignore the phenomenon we could be leaving ourselves open to possible invasion.
Of course, we all know the MOD still monitors UFOs, that the government’s secret DI55 (Defence Intelligence Department 55) is still well and truly operational and that DI55’s official remit includes investigating UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), as UFOs are officially known.
Despite denials, the notion that Britain’s MOD no longer concerns itself with UFOs is laughable.
But it is none the less also true that the MOD has closed DI55’s ‘public UFO desk’, the desk Nick Pope used to man and the one he believes should now be reopened.
Dogfights And The ‘Shoot Down’ Policy
In an interview with BBC News, Pope disclosed his fears regarding the increase in UFO sightings coupled with the MOD’s decision to close its UFO desk.
He said the consequences of the government’s decision to discontinue monitoring UFOs could be huge.
“If we choose to ignore the facts we could be leaving ourselves wide open to alien invasion,” he warned. “I realize this a slightly dramatic way to put it, but my point is that our air defences do seem to be regularly penetrated by “structured craft of unknown origin.”
Many of the craft, he said, had been tracked on radar and even chased by RAF jets.
In a previous interview with Fox News Pope also claimed that RAF pilots had over the years been involved in dogfights with UFOs and that the MOD had issued a ‘shoot down’ directive.
In both instances he affirmed that no military jet had ever come close to matching the UFOs in terms of speed and manoeuvrability, and no UFO had ever been shot down.

Love to get your views on this. Evidence of extraterrestrial visitation, both past and present, seems pretty overwhelming, yet evidence of hostile intention seems pretty thin on the ground.
Should the MOD reopen its UFO desk? Should Britain’s military pursue a ‘shoot down’ policy? Do UFOs pose a threat?
